Machine Deception

Abstract: Robots and other AI systems are evolving into increasingly capable social actors. This evolution presents a variety of intriguing and potentially concerning challenges associated with human perceptions and interactions with these machines. In this session, I will explore the concept of machine deception, examining both its philosophical and practical aspects, including instances where deception might be beneficial. We will discuss how human perceptions of machines are shaped by design choices, and the ethical and practical implications of intentionally or unintentionally developing, deploying, and interacting with deceptive machines.

Bio: Henrik Skaug Sætra is an associate professor at the University of Oslo, Department of Informatics. Sætra is a researcher with a broad and interdisciplinary background and approach, mainly focusing on the political, ethical, and social implications of technology. He focuses specifically on the sustainability-related impacts of AI and other technologies and on issues related to social robots.
