Title: Azione IV.4 – “Contratti di ricerca su tematiche dell´innovazione”
Duration: 3 years
Starting Date: 31 December 2022

TASK SYNOPSIS

Autonomous robots will collaborate with people in their daily living activities in the future. This means that robots will need to be able to share the same physical space and engage human users in social interactions. People should trust robots to be able to assist them in a safe way. This project promotes the research in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for developing the Smart Industry and Robotics for Industry 4.0. In particular, this project aims to develop a new generation of collaborative and cooperative robots that are able to interact with people in an intuitive, usable and trustworthy way by combining modern techniques of AI with enabling technologies. The areas of interest includes socio-cognitive mechanisms that can be formed during human-robot interactions (Cognitive Intelligence – Theory of Mind) and how these can affect people’s trust in robots. Moreover, this implies that robots need to be able of having Artificial Intelligence to meet people’s needs and requests when they use a service. The technology would need to develop robots that can adapt their behaviours in a reliable, robust, understandable and transparent way (Trustworthy AI) to meet people’s needs and individual differences, and to engage them in a physical and social interaction that is socially acceptable, inclusive and equal (IA for the person: personalization of the interaction-AI, Human-robot interaction).

The final goal of this research project is to satisfy the needs for innovation and competitiveness of the industry for meeting the market, and increasing the customers’ retention. The project and technologies are part of the national research area “Smart and sustainable industry, energy and environment”, and the regional research area “Smart Industry” and “Smart, Secure and Inclusive Communities”.
